Hot stone massage
Hot volcanic stone massage helps relax tense muscles, supports circulation and calms the nervous system. It may be suitable for people experiencing poor circulation, sleeplessness or back pain, and can ease muscular discomfort associated with some chronic conditions. Warmth may also improve joint flexibility, make movement easier and reduce muscle tension or cramps.
Volcanic stones retain heat extremely well, making the treatment a form of thermotherapy as well as a deeply relaxing experience.
Warm and hot stones are combined and placed or moved over the body in a carefully planned sequence.
In traditions that work with chakras, the stones may also follow the body’s main energy centres and the flow of qi.
Seven main energy centres are commonly described across the physical and subtle body.
The stones are heated in water in a special container to approximately 42–43°C.
In a hot stone treatment, oiled stones are not placed directly onto unprepared skin. The therapist first warms her hands and uses gentle gliding movements to prepare the skin. The warm stones are then used to massage deeper layers, fascia, ligaments and muscle groups. The session is adapted to the client’s health, sensitive areas and desired outcome, and usually lasts around 90 minutes.
Hot stone massage is often chosen for tension, aching muscles, rheumatic discomfort, degenerative spinal conditions, sports-related strain, sleeplessness, low mood, irritability or premenstrual discomfort.
It is not suitable for everyone, including some people with heart conditions, pregnancy, varicose veins, high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, active menstruation or skin infections. If you have a health condition, ask your doctor whether this treatment is appropriate.
