What Is Massage?
Massage is one of the oldest and simplest forms of hands-on care. Touch is its foundation: a connection with the world beyond ourselves. Human touch can provide reassurance, warmth, comfort and renewed energy.
During massage, receptors in the skin and subcutaneous tissue respond to mechanical pressure. Through reflex pathways, this sensory input can also influence the way the whole body feels and responds.
Massage may support health and mood by:
- encouraging blood and lymph circulation;
- supporting skin elasticity and regeneration;
- relaxing muscles;
- slowing and deepening breathing;
- supporting digestion;
- supporting normal metabolism;
- helping the body move waste products;
- reducing pain and tension;
- encouraging overall relaxation.
Massage cannot cure every illness, but it can improve general wellbeing, ease some symptoms and support recovery.
Avoid heavy meals and alcohol immediately before a massage. It is also sensible to drink enough water throughout the day.
Always tell your therapist if you:
- are pregnant;
- are ill or receiving medical treatment;
- have recently had an injury or surgery;
- have allergies, especially skin allergies;
- have a wound or active skin problem.
During a session at Stella Massage Studio, the client removes clothing only to their level of comfort and lies on the massage table under a towel. The room is quiet and comfortable, and you can choose relaxing music and the level of ambient lighting.
